The object of the Legion of Mary is the sanctification of its members through prayer and actively serving the person of Christ in His Mystical Body in union with Mary, His Mother. The Legion of Mary may be involved in any form of the Lay Apostolate that the Bishop of the Diocese or the Parish Priest assigns it. Its chief concern is the Spiritual Works of Mercy.

  • Active members attend a weekly meeting and fulfill a weekly assignment of visitation involving about two hours.
  • Auxiliary members are those who are unable to be active members, but who support the work of the Legion by their daily prayers. Certain official prayers including the prayer of the Holy Rosary are the bond of the auxiliary member of the Legion.

The Legion of Mary is a parish based lay organization of Catholic men and women. Is was founded in Dublin, Ireland on the 7th of September 1921 by a layman, Frank Duff. In just three decades it has spread far and wide, and now exists on all corners of the globe. It has been approved by the last seven Popes and endorsed by the Second Vatican Council.

The purpose of this association of Catholics is to make its members better Catholics, to mobilize the Catholic laity , and to raise the spiritual level of the entire community through direct contact with, and interest in every member and potential member of the Mystical Body of Christ. In other words the object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God.
